Artwork or outdoor furniture: why choose?

Artwork or outdoor furniture: why choose?

At Barbed we see things a little differently, with an eye for the unusual, and we love helping you choose the best furniture and designs to personalise your outdoor area and create something you adore and most importantly love living in. This is why we loved exhibiting at GROW London so much, and we'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who joined us at this amazing event brought to us by the same creative minds who host the Affordable Art Fair. Everybody was welcome at GROW, whether they loved design or preferred planting; this duality gave us the idea for this blog: we are passionate about designs that are dual uses in outdoor spaces, and today we'd like to introduce you to some of our favourite designs!

Sitable sculptures

At least half of the fun of having a garden is to be able to enjoy it visually all year round as well as sitting in the sun and taking it all in - so all you need is the right outdoor furniture. However, space in the garden may be an issue, especially if you live in the city, where you are lucky if you have a garden; as a consequence, you have to choose carefully how to arrange your outdoor area with the limited space you have. This sometimes means having to choose between artwork and furniture, which is exactly why we love these softly shaped seats that are both gorgeous sculptures and clever seats. We have a soft spot for the welcoming rounded shapes of these sitable sculptures that make them extremely comfortable.

Mathias Claerhout's Deckhopper

The Deckhopper is an outdoor chair designed and made in Belgium. But more than that, it is a lovely piece of art; this deck chair strangely resembles a grasshopper, while its sleek design demonstrates that Mathias Claerhout really does know how to craft metal. Like most pieces by the designer, the Deckhopper is made of stainless steel and polyamide.

Sitable Fin sculpture

If you enjoy both spending time by the seaside and in your garden, then you should definitely have a look at our fin sculpture, a perfect osmosis between land and sea, which happens to be a lovely seat too. This beautifully curved seat and piece of artwork is available in bronze resin or in bronze, depending on your preferences and possibilities – if you want this fin sculpture for your balcony you may prefer resin to actual bronze because of the weight. If you are interested in this stunning piece, do contact us as the designer is always creating new pieces - or you can commission pieces unique for your garden.

Serralunga's Holly All planters

We call the Holly All a planter, but that is actually very restrictive for this amazing sculpture which doubles up (or even triples up) as a seat. Beautifully rounded, this creation is all in three, pot, sculpture and seat; how lovely is it to sit down under a lovely flowerbed while contemplating your garden? We particularly love the round hole in its middle which makes it look so light and dreamy. If you still need convincing about how brilliant the Holly All is, what do you say about the fact that it can be used indoors as well as outdoors? It leaves us speechless! (and that’s no easy thing to achieve!)

We regularly update our catalogue and add to our collection of artwork and outdoor furniture, so feel free to drop by our Barnes showroom to have a look, we’ll be happy to show you around and help you find what you’re looking for.
