The versatility of a garden side table

Versatility in the garden is an important aspect for many, and one often overlooked item of garden furniture that can offer just that is a garden side table.

They can be paired with comfortable garden lounge chairs to create a relaxed informal outdoor spot, utilised as an ancillary to a larger outdoor table to free up extra space while dining outside or prove a handy addition next to the barbecue.

The multi-functional and versatile use of a garden side table make it the perfect solution for a little extra table space in any situation.

Don’t leave your outdoor furniture layout to chance

Leaving the layout of your patio, decking or garden to chance can lead to disaster - especially if you’re working with limited space.

Buying random pieces of garden furniture and hoping they’ll flow together isn’t for the faint of heart, so adopting some simple design principles can allow you to avoid a clash of designs and create an outdoor space that looks great and functions effectively. Nobody wants to be carefully navigating around garden furniture or be left with no cohesion just because a little planning wasn’t conducted beforehand!

Consider the shape and size of your garden side table

It’s not just down to choosing an aesthetically pleasing side table, either. You should also consider the shape and size.

There is no simple answer to determine the size, as this will come down to the space you have available and how you plan to use it. This includes the height, as a garden side table acting as a coffee table in a relaxed area may be better suited low to the ground or around knee height, whereas a barbecue may demand a slightly taller side table.

Ensuring at least a 50cm gap is maintained from the main garden chairs or dining set while arranging your furniture is most ideal, so measure the space before you buy so that you can calculate the ideal size of table. This 50cm gap will be close enough for you to reach over and place a drink on the table, while also allowing room for walking space between the furniture.

With the correct placement a garden side table can become a focal point, but in the wrong place it can also have a negative impact on the flow of your outdoor furniture. The central area of your outdoor furniture space is generally the best position for an outdoor coffee table, and therefore the table is often quite a focal point - especially when paired with seating.
