Budding furniture designer? Consider an intense furniture design course

Allowing our creative side to roam free from time to time can only be a good thing, and whether it’s a passionate hobby or a new activity we’re looking to get our teeth stuck into, there’s plenty of things out there for us to explore!

As designer garden furniture specialists, the furniture design for beginners course available at Central Saint Martins here in London struck us as something many of our customers and blog readers may be interested in.

Central Saint Martins is part of University of the Arts London, and is a well-established and world-renowned arts and design college.

About the furniture design short course

The 4-day course is described as intense and fast paced, and combines both conceptual and practical skills in furniture design and model making. It’s suitable for beginners with an interest in furniture design, as well as graduates and practicing designers who wish to explore and understand furniture design in more depth. Despite perhaps being better suited to beginners, all levels of furniture design experience are welcome.

The course provides an excellent opportunity to test your creativity, while encouraging you to experiment with ideas for your personal designs. Students will also gain a valuable insight into the practical aspects of design such as batch production, ergonomics and technical restraint.

Topics that the course covers:

  • Researching and understanding the needs of a client;

  • Producing fresh ideas and developing concepts in 2D and 3D;

  • Model making, drawing and sketching;

  • Experimenting with different materials (wood, wire, metal and plastics);

  • Testing ideas in scale and 1:1;

  • Presenting your final design in a 3D model.
