Don’t miss the London Design Festival 2017

We feel extremely fortunate to have our beautiful Barnes and Chiswick Barbed showrooms in such a creatively diverse capital city, and from tomorrow, September 16th to 24th, 2017, the London Design Festival will span dozens of locations, as it features some fantastic events, and plays host to over 400 awe-inspiring exhibitions by new and established designers. This year marks the festival’s 15th celebration of both local and international creativity, and will be the largest of its kind to date. Many artists will be showcasing their innovative designs, ranging from architecture to fashion, with exhibitions and installations taking place in more key districts across the capital than ever before.

The nine design quarters

This 15th instalment of the festival, dubbed LDF2017, will take place over nine design quarters across London. Included are:

  • Chelsea, Brixton and Brompton in the south west
  • Bankside, running up along the Thames from Borough Market to Oxo Tower Wharf
  • Islington in the north
  • Shoreditch and Clerkenwell in east central London;
  • Pimlico Road in the south west; and Mayfair in the west.

You could browse around the exhibitions in your local design district, before picking up a red guide from one of the venues to help you choose from the hundreds of free pop-up events that are taking place around you.

Some LDF2017 highlights that are well worth watching out for

Villa Walala

Saturday 16th - Sunday 24th September

A playground of colours will be brought to the city with this year’s Landmark Project, in the form of an installation from Villa Walala. A construction of coloured shapes will brighten the buildings of Exchange Square, Broadgate, as a soft castle structure made from materials such as vinyl, nylon and PVC will be displayed, with the purpose of exciting curiosity and relieving the stress of city work life.

Transmission

Saturday 16th - Sunday 24th September

Most design exhibitions and installations follow a basic “look, but don’t touch” rule, especially if they are in a museum! However, the Transmission installation, which will be in the V&A museum, is meant to be touched. Made in collaboration with an Italian manufacturer of artificial suede, the design is a 21.3-meter-long sculpture of folded material. Gold and silver threads create an ornamental pattern of over 2,000,000 flecks, which run along the edge of the sculpture.
