Barbed Loves - Leg o' Mutton Nature Reserve
We love the Leg o' Mutton Nature Reserve in Barnes
A former reservoir saved from development by local action. It has become a hidden treasure, where ducks and other water birds can breed away from the famous London Wetland Centre. In winter, there are teal, tufted duck, widgeon and shovellers.
It is interesting to see how trees have colonised the brick and concrete sides of the reservoir and reeds have grown in shallow places.
The path goes round the lake and has entrances to Lonsdale Road and the Thames Path.
Although the reserve has few facilities, the shops and cafes in Barnes are close.
The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers help to maintain the reserve.
The Wildfowl and Wetland Centre is about a mile away, and Chiswick Eyot is on the other side of the river.

When walking along the Thames Path between Barnes Bidge and Hammersmith Bridge on the south (Surrey) bank, look for a gateway in a wooden fence. You can follow a path above a lake and re-emerge onto the Thames Path at the other end.
The Thames Path in this area is a cycle route.
Nearest station is at Barnes Bridge.
